Welcome to the Flagstaff Region!
Description:Welcome to the Flagstaff Region, located 150 km southeast of Edmonton, in east central Alberta. Ten communities are located in the region creating an area with an affordable cost of living, exciting recreational opportunities, friendly people and a quiet, rural lifestyle.
While you are visiting, take a break and enjoy the local culture of the region. Step back in time at any of the region’s six museums, including Canada’s only surface coal mining museum – The Diplomat Mine Interpretive Site. Visitors can also “relive the memories” at the Sodbusters Archives Museum in Strome. The annual Country Roots Tour is an exciting opportunity to experience Flagstaff Region’s food, farms and history – the tour has been a sold-out success in previous years; get your tickets before they’re gone!
ATTRACTIONS & EVENTS
Take a ride with Battle River Train Excursions, where you will enjoy spectacular scenery throughout the region on a vintage passenger train. Enjoy the great views around Alliance, Galahad, and see Canada's largest baseball glove in Heisler. You may even stop in for a meal at Heisler Hotel — all on the route through the southern part of the region.
Enjoy fishing, hiking, boating, and camping at the many public and private campgrounds and parks in the region. Check out the facilities at Fish Lake Park located 2 km west of Hardisty – complete with a lakeside gazebo, covered day-use shelter, two large group sites, playground, beach area, fishing and free firewood. Or perhaps drop a line into the Diplomat Trout Pond just 15 minutes from Forestburg. It is stocked annually with rainbow trout and is home to many wildlife and plant species. Just north of Strome is Wavy Lake, a favourite feeding stop for geese and ducks, and a choice area for hunters in the fall.
