2016 Festivals east of Edmonton!
Amazing food, family fun, the open outdoors and culture to immerse yourself in, what’s not to love about summer festivals? Here’s a smattering of festivals East of Edmonton that are still taking place this summer – get the car started!
Vegreville Country Fair
WHERE: 4753 45 Ave, Vegreville
WHEN: August 4 - 6
WHY: The tagline is “Fun for the whole family” and this fair makes sure to deliver. Events include a midway featuring games, strongman competitions, tractor pulls and barnyard activities for kids. Whether you get lost in the madness of the chuckwagon races or the hypnotist performing at the grandstand, there will be enough carnival fun for everyone!
Thorhild Car Show
WHERE: Thorhild Arena, Thorhild County
WHEN: August 13, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
WHY: The first car show of what will hopefully be many iterations to come. Expect to see tons of cars, trucks, motorcycles and antique tractors on display from members of the community, with a steak supper to follow after.
EINP Bison Festival
WHERE: Elk Island National Park
WHEN: August 13
WHY: Now in its third year, Elk Island’s annual Bison Festival is a tribute to all things bison. Celebrate the culture and cuisine of Alberta bison in style and learn about how the work done at the park saved bison from becoming extinct in North America.
Movie in the Park
WHERE: Redwater School Grounds
WHEN: August 19, Dusk
WHY: Slated to happen on the first day of Discovery Days, Redwater’s annual summer fair. Kick-off Discovery Days in family fashion – grab a blanket, get the kids in their pajamas and head out to the Redwater School Grounds just before dusk for a memorable evening. Movie is Captain America!
Movie Under the Stars
WHERE: Legacy Park, Fort Saskatchewan
WHEN: August 19
WHY: The community hang-out you’ve been waiting for! This year's theme being "Everyday Heroes,” celebrating those who strive to make differences in their community, big or small. Watch “Zootopia” in a fantastic park environment, all the comforts of a drive-thru experience but with a blanket and a chair instead!
Babas and Borshch Ukrainian Festival
WHERE: 5021 - 50 Street, Andrew
WHEN: August 20 - 21
WHY: 2016 marks the 125th anniversary of Ukrainians immigrating to Canada, so it goes without saying that this year’s Babas and Borshch Festival will be one to remember. You’ll be digging into tons of Ukranian food and partaking in many cultural festivities. You can learn to make pich oven bread (yum!) and try your hand at Ukranian dancing or expect to prove yourself in a Borshch cook off. Try samples of moonshine and take part in an outdoor music jam. Meanwhile, Saturday night plays host to Zabava, a party for the ages as you indulge in a feast, enjoy performances by the Verkhovyna Folk Ensemble and dance to the Trembita Dance Band.
